Law 13 - Free Kicks 11/10/2007

RE: Under 12

casey of Whitman, Massachusetts Unite States asks...

Where do you put the ball if it is an indirect free kick inside the penalty box? I am a player, referee, and soccer fan.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

At the spot where the offense occurred, unless that is inside the goal area. Outbound kicks for offenses in the goal area can be placed anywhere in the goal area, just as a goal kick can be. Inbound kicks for IFK offenses are moved to the nearest point on the long edge of the goal area, the 6-yard line.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

If you are a referee you should be using appropriate terminology, and should also know any indirect free kick in the penalty area is taken from the spot of the offense - unless it is in the goal area and as Ref Voshol notes above, there it depends on whether the kick is inbound or outbound. I would also remind you any outbound kick must leave the penalty area on the first kick in order for play to restart.

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

Where the infraction occurred. If it was in the goal area and kick is for attackers, then the ball shall be placed on top of the goal area line closest to the point of infraction. If infraction was in goal area for defenders, then the kick can be taken anywhere inside goal area.
