The time is fininshed can the refree still keep the play on as the ball is in the D

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Manzar,
interesting you tell a slightly different story from one above on this same incident but in effect once a referee or in this case an arbitrary league policy of deciding when a match is over by a whistle or horn. No goal can be allowed if the ball has not ALL ready crossed over the goal line into the goal under the crossbar and between the posts.
This is MUC different than basketball where a shot on its way to the basket can still count after the match has ended.
Here I thought I thought only USA highschool /colledge had these adaptations of a match ending time clock .
Cheers

Evidently your league has mucked up the rules, taking the responsibility for keeping time away from the referee. In that case, the league has to decide what will happen in such a situation as this one. Maybe somewhere hidden in the timekeeping rules, maybe not even stated but understood in a nudge-nudge-wink-wink sense, is a sentence that says, "Time is up when the timekeeper indicates, or when the referee thinks the attacking play is over."

Your League for whatever reasons have decided to NOT follow the LOTG and make an outside entity the time keeper. That said, time was up the instant the timekeeper blew the whistle whether the referee heard it or not. You can't have it both ways. Either you play by the rules and the referee decides when time is up or you give that authority to an outside timekeeper. You can't allow the referee to add any time in this instance. As an aside, if you are going to use an outside timekeeper you should use a bullhorn so at least everyone knows when time is up

Interesting we have two questions from a local we don't ordinarily see anything and the questions are similar. Could this be the same match? Law 7 - The Duration of the Match gives the referee the the task of adding time lost. Law 5 tells us the referee acts as time keeper.

Now it seems the League in which this match was played might have taken that right. So be it. Well done to the league for adding something that is unable to be sorted out within the Laws of the Game.

Regards,

The laws of the game indicate that the referee is the time keeper for a good reason. This just one reason for that.
