View Referee Keith Contarino profileAnswer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney Jon, visualize a man with four arms and four legs, a head and a body. This guy represents the direct free kick fouls. Four arms = striking, pushing, holding and deliberately handling the ball. Four legs = kicking, tripping, tackling opponent before touching ball, and jumping at. Body = charging. Head = spitting. If the offense for which you blew the whistle is not described by this guy, then it will be an IDFK. That's the simplest version. There are times for a dropped ball and the other restarts, but that wasn't your question. Reread the Laws of the Game, please.
