Question Number: 18647

Law 5 - The Referee 3/30/2008

RE: Rec

Julie of Carrollton, TX USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 18631

Thank you for clearing that up. The offending players were sent off and after about 10 minutes of discussion, the game resumed without another incident. Security was added for the referees. This just isn't something we see in the US (at the pro level) and I think the referees realized it was an unuaual occurance. All the referees were from different neutral countries.

Hi julie,

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Some interesting facts concerning this match. It was the referee's first match at this level. The referee abandoned the match and that is why there was a long delay in getting a restart of play. The FC Dallas coach begged him to restart play because it was a warm up for the upcoming MLS season. Once the decision to abandon a match is taken the referee should never change it!

With respect to the management of the free kick, the referee could definitely have handled things better.

Regards,
