Law 7 - Match Duration 5/12/2008

RE: Varsity Under 18

Joey Sanders of Marion, SC US asks...

Can the game be ended on a scoring opportunity...such as a corner?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Yes. Especially in a high school or an NCAA match where the rule makers have taken the responsibility of time keeper from the referee.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

One would hope that a referee would not repeat the actions of Clive Thomas, who ended a World Cup game while the ball was in flight off a corner kick. That also ended his international career, even though he was entirely correct in Law.

However if the kicking team takes their merry ol' time setting up for the kick and time runs out, well they should have hustled. It's a scoring opportunity only if you make use of the opportunity.

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

Yes. The only time that it cannot is on a penalty kick. When all time is expired, including stoppage time, the match ends.
