Question Number: 19249Law 7 - Match Duration 6/2/2008Mike R of , USA asks...Rules state that a game or half has to be extended for a penalty kick..
Does this mean upon the ball being kicked and it is saved, missed or in the net, you blow the whistle for half time/end of game?
Or should you use common sense to see if a score scoring oppurtunity is available upon a deflected save by the goalie?
Thanks Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller No. The match or half ends when the kick is complete. The referee makes the final determination of this.

The kicker gets one touch on the ball, the keeper gets as many touches as necessary to try to stop it from going into the net, and everybody else stays out of it. The referee should explain this to the players before the kick is taken. "Ladies, time has expired. We're only going to take the PK. There will be no rebounds. No one but the kicker and keeper should even try to play. Understand?"

I explained that every one but the kicker and the keeper might as well go stand some place else on the field because they weren't going to be allowed to participate anyway.

The ball is in play until it goes out of bounds or stops but may not be played a second time by the kicker or anyone of the kicker's team. If the keeper makes a stab and deflects it but the ball spins backwards into the net, it's a goal as the ball still has kinetic energy.

If it enters the goal it counts as a goal scored during the match. If it does not enter the goal because the goalkeeper catches and holds it or it just runs out of kinetic energy the period ends.
Regards,
