Question Number: 21075

Law 13 - Free Kicks 4/1/2009

RE: Professional Professional

Randall Howes of Taylorsville, UT USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 21061

The very first game that Real Salt Lake played was in monsoon conditions awat at New York.

To keep the ball stationary one player held the ball down with his foot until a split second before the kick was taken.

Some New York players tried to rush the ball when the 'holder' touched the ball but the referee made them wait until the 'kicker' kicked the ball.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Is that a question? Or simply a comment on whether or not one might see a ball holder even at the professional level - and if that, agreed.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

I would assume the referee would tell all the players on both teams that one player on the kicking team was going to hold the ball and not to participate in play until the ball was kicked.

As he should, standing on the ball is NOT kicking it!
