Question Number: 21491

Law 7 - Match Duration 6/7/2009

RE: Olympic Development Program Under 15

Gil of Geigertown, PA United States asks...

The final whistle of the game was blown during an attack on goal, ball was crossed and headed in. Whistle was blown while the ball was in flight to the player that headed it in. Should the goal have counted or not?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

The whistle is ANNOUNCING to all in attendance that the referee has STOPPED play however wise or unwise that maybe.
It is a FACT of play and the goal is disallowed. Now there could be some interesting fodder in the assessment at the post game review about Time being relative and not to the micro second with perhaps more focus on the end of play instead of the watch. It is important to realize though it is UNFAIR to extend a match to get a chance as it is to shorten and take away a chance.
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Play has stopped at the instance the referee decides is has. The whistle is to tell everyone that play has already stopped. No goal. keep in mind that letting play continue past the expired time simply to let the attacking team complete a shot on goal is blatantly unfair to the opponents
