Question Number: 23283Law 7 - Match Duration 5/9/2010RE: Competitive Under 17 Dave of Ottawa, Canada asks...A corner kick is awarded, at the end of regulation time. Does the ref blow the game off, or allow the kick to corner kick to be taken, then blow the game off? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Dave The referee is the sole judge of time. If all the time has expired before the corner kick can be taken then the referee should blow for the end of the game before the kick is taken. Many young referees use a countdown timer to time the game. When the timer reaches zero the whistle is blown to end play.

The laws grant the referee complete discretion about how much time to add, and IMO ought to use the discretion wisely. It is unwise, IMO, to end the match on a corner kick when the ball is in the air. Lawful, but unwise.
