Question Number: 25358

Law 7 - Match Duration 8/26/2011

RE: rec Under 9

marc of westerly, rhode island usa asks...

how long are u8 games

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Marc
That is a matter for the competition organisers who set the competition rules. The Laws of the Game are modified in respect of time, offside, ball, goals and field of play size along with the number plus type of substitutions.
In general two halves of 20 minutes would be normal.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Any referee who is unsure of the length of games (or any other modifications that might be implemented by youth leagues) should ask the person who assigns the games for clarification.

For U8, USYS recommends 4 12-minute quarters. Other typical rule implementations provide for 20-minute or 25-minute halves.

Beside knowing the length of games, make sure you also know the local league modifications regarding items such as:
goalkeeper or not
offside
when substitutions can be made
use of indirect or direct free kicks, penalty kicks
whether heading or slide tackles are allowed
