Question Number: 27934

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 10/24/2013

RE: Adult

John of seattle, wa usa asks...

This question is a follow up to question 21656

How about attackers in the wall who PUSH the on defenders in wall as the kick is taken? I have seen it tried a couple times by the MLS Portland Timbers. As the kicker approaches the dead ball they lean and push to try to collapse the wall and create an opening to shoot through. Is that legal?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi John
This is not legal and referees should look out for it. Part of the difficulty for referees at these ceremonial free kicks is that so much is going on and it can be difficult to focus on one location only. If it does happen it is a direct free kick to the defence at the point of the infraction for pushing.
At this level the astute referee will do his homework in advance of the game and recognise situations of where this is likely to happen and by what players.
Pierluigi Collina former FIFA referee, now head of refereeing in UEFA is a great advocate of knowing the teams, tactics, behaviours in advance of any game and the referee adjusting his game accordingly. See 2.45 on this video

If you can see this watching a game involving the Portland Timbers so should an MLS referee in his preparation. Call the foul when it happens and it is unlikely to happen again.
