Question Number: 29849

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 10/24/2015

RE: Adult

Sunil shah of LAGOS, Lagos Nigeria asks...

Can a goalkeeper collect the ball by hand a back pass by his own teammate in barckays premiership competition?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Sunil,
Short answer. It depends!

the LOTG do NOT prevent a team mate from passing the ball BACK to their keeper. There is a RESTRICTION of (non use of hands) on the keeper, only if that pass back was deliberately kicked by a team mate TO the keeper or on a DIRECT throw in by a team mate! This applies in the EPL as it does across the world leagues. The keeper is NOT restricted in the use of their hands if the ball is passed in any other legal way, (Say with the head or redirected chested pass), or if off an opponent! The keeper can be further released from the handling restriction if ITOOTR the ball comes off the foot of a team mate ACCIDENTLY as in a deflection!
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Sunil
If the ball is deliberately kicked by a team mate then the goalkeeper may not touch it with his hand/s. Should he do do it is an indirect free kick from where the touch by the goalkeeper happened.
Now there will be times when the deliberate element of the kick is debatable such as in a tackle or the ball deflects off an opponent. In those cases there is no offence. It is now a reasonably rare offence
