Question Number: 35895

High School 3/22/2025

RE: High School

James Caponera of Okatie, SC United States asks...

Is it permissable for a player to have anything written on the legs if it is not offensive ?

Answer provided by Referee Peter Grove

Hi James,

If, as you say, there is nothing offensive about what is written, then there would be nothing in the Laws of the Game that would cover this. However the rules of competition (ROC) set by the competition organisers might have something to say on this. So if you have seen something that concerns you, you might like to refer it to the competition's organising body, to get their ruling on it.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi James
In the modern world it is not unusual for players to have tattoos on the arms and legs. Unless there is something seen that is offensive then it is of no real concern to a referee.

A player may also write with a marker some words of encouragement or support. Again of no concern unless it is offensive which is unlikely

Answer provided by Referee Joe Manjone

Hi James,

Writing on the body of a high school soccer player is not mentioned in the rules of the National Federation of High School Sports or the South Carolina High School League.

The writing on the body especially since it is not offensive is legal. I have seen tattoos on high school athletes and have never seen any concerns develop.

I hope your high school team makes it to the State Championships in May.
