Question Number: 14205

Law 17 - Corner Kick 10/20/2006

RE: Rec Under 16

Anthony Sharp of Snohomish, Washington U.S.A. asks...

This question is a follow up to question 6207

A similar thing happened in a game I was coaching in that a retaking of the cornerkick was awarded to the opposing team because the ref said the ball had not entered the field of play. I disagreed because the ball starts in play at the arc, she said that in their ref. training by their club that by the way the ball was placed by the opposing player that the ball did not start in the field of play and therefor since the ball never made it into the field that the opposing team got a due over. I said that the corner kick should not have been allowed if she could see that the ball was not placed in the arc to start with. True or not true? Thank you for your time.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Even though you shouldn't argue with the refree, you are 100% correct. The only way the ball could NOT be on the field of play when the kick took place would be if the kicker had placed it completely off the field of play. Even if the kicker had, the referee allowed the kick to proceed so it was technically ON the field of play. As soon as it was kicked and moved it was in play. Never award a retake of a corner for not entering the field of play. This only happens with throw-ins. A can assure you that no one with any responsibility trained this referee to allow for a retake of a corner.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Sometimes referee instructors just get it wrong. This happens very seldom. What usually happens is the student referee is listening and not hearing correctly.

The ball is in play, from corner kick, when it is kicked and moves.

This referee got it mixed up with a throw in. Throw ins need to be on field or it is a redo. Corner kicks are never retaken.
