Question Number: 15474

Law 11 - Offside 5/14/2007

Terrence of Branchburg, NJ USA asks...

A player is on a breakaway to the left of the goal post about 18 yards out, a teammate is on the right with a defender in front of him. The keeper comes out to challenge the man with the ball and gets beat, he now passes the ball to space and the player on the right beats his man to the ball and scores. Offides or not?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

No idea. I believe when the ball is passed the player on the right is closer to the opponent's goal than the next to last opponent but we are not told where he is in relation to the ball.

You do not give us enough information here to make an informed comment. As a referee, you must know the criteria defining an offside position - were they all met?
