Question Number: 15709

Law 11 - Offside 6/5/2007

RE: Rec, Select Under 16

Tim of Shelby Twp, Michigan USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 15474

Assuming that the 2nd offensive player is behind the defender but closer to goal than the ball and the keeper [ Ed: as in 15474], would it be correct to say that he is offside? Otherwise he would be onside if behind either the ball or both the keeper and defender.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Tim you are taking a question having not enough information, adding information and coming to a conclusion based on the additional information.

For any offside offence the referee must establish a player in is an offside position before he is able penalize for an offside offence. If you're positioning the player in an offside position, playing the ball from a colleague to him then observe him participate in play it is correct to intervene for an offside offence. It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

If he is closer to the goal than both the ball and the next to last opponent, he is in offside position. The first line pf Law 11 is, "it is not an offence in and of itself to be in offside position". Offside offence involves position and active involvement in play
