Question Number: 16669

League Specific 9/13/2007

RE: Rec Under 12

Marianne of Valley Springs, CA USA asks...

Can you explain the reason for a rec league to impose a rule stating that a team can not be 5 goals or more ahead of another team; and if they are winning by 5 goals or more than the winning team needs to start taking players out of the game when they are ahead by 5 goals, and take one more player out for each additional goal scored?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Yes, absolutely! The answer is because it makes them feel good. It demonstrates to their children being better than your opponent is something to be ashamed of. And I am unanimous in this opinion...

Regards,

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

While I don't disagree with Ref. Fleischer, I'm sure the intention of the rec league was to institute a "mercy rule" of some sort. Unfortunately, it doesn't provide either mercy or merit.
