Question Number: 12424

Law 17 - Corner Kick 3/24/2006

RE: Middle School competitive conference Under 15

Benjamin Spears of Fayetteville, TN Lincoln asks...

I'm not just a coach really. I am a soccer enthusiast. I have been playing for roughly 16 years now (since I was 4) and have been coaching for 3. I also have been certified as an AYSO referee but it has been quite awhile. My question is about the corner kick. Is it or is it not legal to take the corner kick from either side the team chooses? As it is for a goal kick. I have seen this done in the professional ranks and also in high school and select play. You really don't see it as much in a middle school game just because of the less tactical level that most coaches are playing to. Now I agree that in some cases this can be interpreted by the referee as a delay of game and would call it myself if I saw it. But if a team or player gets it to the desired corner as quickly as possible is this allowed. There are definite instances where this could be tactically sound for instance if the wind direction was not favorable or your player felt more confident from a certain side. Thanks!
