Question Number: 12507

Character, Attitude and Control 4/7/2006

RE: rec Adult

Dale Sams of tulsa, ok USA asks...

In the second leg of the Arsenal-Juventus Champions Leg Game, Pavel Nedved landed a crunching tackle on an Arsenal player. Seeing he had injured the player, Nedved immediatly started rolling around as if *he* were injured too.

Nedved had a yellow card already so he was issued another (for the tackle) and sent off.

Had Nedved not had a Yellow and had I been the Ref, I would have given him a Yellow for the tackle, and another for the immediate simulation afterwards.

My question is, does this (givng 2 yellows for basically the same incident) seem unusual to you?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Harsh, yeah. Deserved, you bet.

Nedved would not have lasted to that incident had I been the match official. I would have offered him a shower for the excessively forceful trip/kick about 8 minutes before the incident you ask of.

The gent was way over the edge much earlier in the match, as evidenced by his dissent of the referee's decisions. But I was not the match referee. The match referee did a fantastic job on the match, as did his assistants.

We, with the ability to watch replay after replay and listen to the opinions of commentators find it much easier to form an opinion than the referee on the spot, who has nothing to go on but his expertise and the feel of the match.

Regards,
