Question Number: 12547Other 4/12/2006RE: Adult Harry Whitehouse of Scarborough, North Riding of Yorkshire UK asks...This question is a follow up to question 12156 I'm sorry, but I have no idea why it is suggested that a wise referee would encourage defenders to leave the area. Have I misunderstood something? Why is the position of defenders in these circumstances any concern of the referee? Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson Hi Harry, it is a good idea when quoting or referencing other questions to include the number so we can identify the the question and respond appropriately. Refereeing is a proactive affair where we try to eliminate possible problems with an occassional word here and there . I agree why defenders inside their own area might be required to be told to leave could be a tactical moment best suited for the coaching staff. However, as I am unaware of exactly what we are talking about I will hold further comment until briefed! Cheers

View Referee Richard Dawson profileAnswer provided by Referee Debbie Hoelscher I would agree that the referee shouldn't demand that the defenders get out of their own PA for GKs and FKs taken from inside the PA. At the same time, I'm not really sure that it's such a big deal either. The defenders can't do anything with the ball until it's out of the area anyways. Besides, coaches are forever thinking it's their business to referee for us.....
