Question Number: 12815Character, Attitude and Control 5/16/2006RE: competitive Under 13 crystal of Calgary , canada asks...This question is a follow up to question 8240 Hi, recently my boys played a game and at our age group we are to supply our own lines men, so a parent from each team has to volunteer. I was wondering if while playing the role of a the assistant referee if u are also able to coach ur team at the same time? Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino Assuming sanity reigns in Canada I would have to say NO NO NO!!! The club linesman is to assist the referee. He or she has to pay attention and has to be alert. No way should a club linesman ever try to influence play by coaching. The cluib linesman is to ONLY signal when the ball has gone out of play. That's it but you have to pay attention. If I caught a club linesman of mine actively coaching, I'd take the flag back asap and give it to another.

In fact I PREFER to referee as a single official in that the parents and coaches SHOULD watch and enjoy the game . I remind the teams when I referee as a single official to always PLAY to the whistle ! It is unfortunate but the volunteer linesman is not permitted the same luxery of enjoying a match as everyone else cheering. Cheers

1. How can you coach and perform your duties at the same time. Coaching will distract you from your job.
2. The linesmen may seem biased and people will be more likely to perceive him as a cheater if they hear him coaching a side. As always,
