Question Number: 13115

Law 18 - Common Sense 6/20/2006

RE: Under 16

James Yokie of Ellicott city, MD USA asks...

I have a question about soccer game law: If all 11 players of one team stand shoulder-by-shoulder on goal line (for the rest of the game) after they lead 1:0 to their opponent, what should referee do?

Thanks.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Enjoy their demonstration. They're going to have their backsides handed to them, by their opponents, sooner or later. What a dumb thing to do...

Regards,

Do nothing. This is a terrible idea and after a multitude of shots on goal, sooner or later one's going in.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi James

well the goal is 24 feet by 8 feet do 11 players truly cover all that space? If I have the ball and kick it as hard as I can at the goal from close range how soon before a groin hit ot head hit flattens one?

Just for the record while it is legal for defenders to tacticaly do such a bonehead manuever during dynamic play on on any attacking INDFK closer to the goal line than 10 yards up to the outer edge of the 6 yard goal area this tactic of a wall of defenders doing as you described is often done andis in fact the only time where the manditory 10 yards on free kick is shortened! Cheers
