Question Number: 13291Character, Attitude and Control 7/8/2006RE: Travel Under 13 Monica of Wakefield, RI USA asks...At a tournament today, the ref twice called the goalie on an illegal throw. The ref said the keeper could not throw the ball overhand (he threw the ball onehanded overhand like in baseball). In 30 years of watching soccer (all levels) I've never heard that call or any rule suggesting the keeper can't throw the ball overhand (not to mention that I saw the keepers in the world cup do it regularly). Is there such a rule? Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer No. The keeper may use his hands for six seconds. How he throws it is up to him, not the referee. If that is what the referee pulled him up for the referee needs some serious refresher training.
Regards,
