It was the limiting barrier where goal kicks could be taken. Today the line six yards from and parallel to the goal line is where free kicks awarded the defenders in their goal area are usually taken, though they may be taken from any point within the goal area. The point on the line, nearest where an offence happened, is where indirect free kicks are taken by attackers. That's pretty much it.

View Referee Chuck Fleischer profileAnswer provided by Referee Ben Mueller Ball must be placed inside of it on a goal kick. Also, any IFK offense that occurred in the goal area for the attacking team gets placed on top of goal area parallel to spot of infraction.
