Question Number: 14324

Character, Attitude and Control 10/30/2006

RE: Rec Under 10

Dennis Rains of Dallas, TX USA asks...

At a recent game, the opposing team (visitor) chose to sit at mid-field during halftime. This seemed like a "this is our field" type of behavior. Is there a rule that states that players stay off of the field during halftime? I'm sure the girls didn't think of this themselves, rather, the coach was trying to either insult our team (which was already well behind in score and skill level) or motivate further his team. In any case, it seemed kind of unsportsmanlike.

Thanks

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

It's the referee's field. I would not allow a team to spend the half in the middle of the field. It's disrespectful to the other team and is a form of taunting. I'd ask the coach nicely to please take his team off the field and find some other place to conduct his half time. I doubt I'd have to come up with a reason but I've been known to reply, "because I said so" if need be.

Nothing in the Laws that mention this, but I agree with Mr. Contarino. I would tell them to head over to their technical area or go else where.

The Laws do not mention anything such as this. If I thought the opponents of this team were put off by the behavior I would take my ream into the center of their circle and take my interval there. If they didn't like me in their midst they could leave.
