Question Number: 14477

Law 1- The Field 11/20/2006

RE: Competitive Under 17

Jose M. Infante of Waterloo, Iowa USA asks...

3 parts

1)... can you tell me ...why is neccesary to have a full sized field
2)what are the dimmensions of a full sized field?
3) we play an a Foot ball field and has concrete on 2 sides is this ok??? or should we tell the AD, REf??

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Yes I can.

1) Because, in the Laws of the Game, on page 3, it states the size of the field can be modified for players under 16 years of age and over 35 years of age.

2) 100-130 yards length. 50-100 yards breadth. Rectangular in shape.

3) I would recommend the touchlines be at least three yards from the concrete because the players running on and trying to turn on or stop on run considerable risk of falling and injuring themselves on the concrete. [Did you ever run off the field to retrieve the ball for a throw-in?] The referee MUST not allow play on this field unless it is marked so the possibility of running on the concrete is remote.

Regards,

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

1. Laws say so. 2. 50 by 100 yds wide and 100 by 130 yds long. Length must be longer than width. 3. I would agree with my colleague here. Concrete should be at least 3 yds away from field.
