Question Number: 14784

Law 18 - Common Sense 2/2/2007

RE: Rec College

Antoine Murray of ulverston, cumbria uk asks...

After much protest by the players about the referee's decision, the King of (some middle eastern country that now eludes me) came down from the stands and spoke to the ref and he changed his decision. I think this happened in the 80s, could you please inform me which match this was?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

I suppose anything is possible in countries that have the power of life and death over its citizens on a whim. The only justification in law is the referee had not yet restarted play and as such his decision is not yet irreversable. Even if the referee was intimidated as a fact of play once play restarted it would be fixed in law unless improper as to why play was stopped. If it was a Fifa match that referee would be dropped and the country responsible likely banned from FIFA play!
Cheers

Hmm, was this a part of the show the 24 hrs or a reality program?

If this happened in real life, FIFA might look at barring the country from international play because of undue influence of the government.
