Question Number: 14850

Law 4 - Players Equipment 2/16/2007

RE: High School

Bobby Hartley of Palmer, Alaska United States asks...

I am going to play high school soccer this year and a salesman said that aluminum studs aren't usually allowed. i hear that its up to the ref but i want to be sure. Should i get different cleats?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Buy the boots that fit best, wear best and you like best. If they have metal studs NEVER walk on anything but grass because of the chance sharp edges may be produced. Some referees do prevent wearing this type of stud so my advice is to have a second pair of boots at the ready.

Regards,

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Bobby,
studs should match the turf you are on, in Alaska how soft is the ground? Technically studs are not outlawed by FIFA but certain leagues frown on them and do make local policy forbidding their use. Usually these cleats are removable and be they plastic or aluminum they come in different lengths and be sure your ankle and footwear are properly fit and done up correctly as roll overs are common. As my colleague wisely suggests NEVER wear your cleats anywhere except on the field. A kit bag with a soft shoe cover keeps both the boot and the cleats safe and sound! Cheers
