Question Number: 15034Law 1- The Field 3/23/2007RE: Cmpetive High School Trolex Smithers of Buffalo, New York USA asks...is there a purpose for the little box besides for goal kicks????? Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller Yes. The little box is called the goal area. On a goal kick, the ball may be placed any where inside of the goal area. Also on free kicks going out the ball may be placed anywhere inside of the goal area if the infraction occurred in the goal area. If an indirect free kick offense occurs inside goal area for attackers, ball is place on the top of the goal area closest to the point of the infraction.

View Referee Ben Mueller profileAnswer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer Prior to 1997 the goal area was a safe area in which the goalkeeper could not be charged,. Prior to 1993 divided in half it was where goal kicks could be taken. Today it is as Ref Mueller states.
