RE: 8 Under 16

billy of sunderland, tyne+wear england asks...

is there a signal for when a team scores a goal

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Billy if the ball is in the back of the net EVERYONE can figure it out! The tough ones are the in and out, and the just over the line and only the linesman saw it.

I'll address that. Up goes the linesman's flag and when the referee sees it he blows for a stoppage. He doesn't have a clue why, he just trusts his assistant. Why, because the assistant has the flag in the hand away for the by-line, this shows the restart is for the defence! It is a "no signal signal" meant to help the referee. Right play is stopped and everyone is milling about smartly waiting for a decision. In America the linesman will put his flag down by his side and sprint towards the halfway line some distance. That tells the referee a goal has been scored. The referee, in America anyway, points to the centre circle because that's where the restart is.

I have seen other national organisation's referees do this in any number of ways. We do it that way here.

Regards,
