Question Number: 15361

Character, Attitude and Control 5/2/2007

Bill Sayre of Greenwood, SC USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 15333

Re: Sent-off youth players

I can't believe this match was allowed to continue to this point of a free-for-all. I have not worked a game at any level where league or tournament rules didn't address this (at least in SC and GA). If the miscreant can't contain himself, then the ejected player and a responsible adult (their parent, guardian, or coach) must remove the player from the area.

When this did not occur, the match should have been terminated. It is unfortunate that so many players risked serious injury because the CR did not do his or her job properly. Also, how the thugs only got a one-game suspension is absolutely unbelievable!

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

You understand this and so do I, problem is the referee didn't. We all start our learning from someplace. This referee has found a place to start learning, I hope she takes our advice.

Regards,

Intimidation of young officials and the reluctance of bystanders to do or say anything contributes as much or more to these situations than failure to pull the pin and walk away by the referee. We know better and we will act accordingly she now has some support and she can choose a better path in the future! Cheers

Hi Bill. Yes, the referee blew this one. If the sent off player was completely removes as he should have been, this might not have escalated as it did. Would love to hear the referee;s side. Join us for the Atlanta Cup next year
