Question Number: 15680

Mechanics 6/2/2007

RE: Competitive Under 11

Steve of Vero Beach, FL USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 15659

Let me clarify my comments in question 15659.

I agree that the handling was somewhat trifling, but the last offense that was whistled, the keeper while holding the ball was completely over the PA line. Later the coach, also Keepers Dad, thanked me for making the point.

My half-time warning was very simple - guys, do not carry the ball over the PA line. You are getting real close and I don't want to have to call you for it.

Since I coach as well, I always appreciate a ref that will take a moment to explain and even politely warn the kids when they are pushing the limits. I think it makes for better players, so I carry that attitude onto the field when I ref. - especially the U-littles.

I have also been known to go over to the parents before the game and answer questions on the laws or league rules. I find most parents appreciative and I believe it has even helped them understand the game a little.

Yes, sounds like you did well. We sometimes add "if's and's and but's" into our answers because we never know the background of our readers. I spend a lot of my hours on the field with younger players and in the rec league. At those levels, teaching the Laws of the Game is as important as the coaches teaching the skills and tactics of the game.

Hi Steve. I agree with you that educating youth players/coaches/parents is part of our job and a benefit to the game. It also makes our job easier as educated parents are not constantly screaming offside or handball. I have found that some parents are reluctant to respond to "Do you have anything you'd like me to go over?" When they say no, I ask if one of them would explain offside to me. That always gets a response and I then get to explain offside, handling and anything else they want. Kudos to you for recognizing the need for education

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Yes Steve, you have done well indeed. I used to try and help out in the teaching of younger players, gave them the opportunity learn on the field. Used to, right up to the time a couple of coaches took offense to me doing their job, stopped that right now. Now I don't help out any more, unless the coach desires to offer instruction to me...
