During a recent penalty shoot out, the goalkeeper palmed the ball onto the bar. The ball rebounded, struck the goalkeeper on the back of the head and went into the goal. The referee allowed the goal - was this correct or should the initial save have counted?

Hi Dave,
good goal as long as the referee saw no infringements by the kicking team and had not yet blown his whistle to end the pk before the ball crossed completely over the goal line and under the crossbar between the posts. Once the ball is kicked towards the goal on a PK in a shootout that ball's momentum must be finished, controlled or out of play!

Law 14 says, "When a penalty kick is taken during the normal course of play, or time has been extended at half-time or full time to allow a penalty kick to be taken or retaken, a goal is awarded if, before passing between the goalposts and under the crossbar:
? the ball touches either or both of the goalposts and/or the crossbar, and/or the goalkeeper"

The procedure for Kicks From The Penalty Mark in the back of the Laws book says, "Unless otherwise stated, the relevant Laws of the Game and International F.A. Board Decisions apply when kicks from the penalty mark are being taken"

Sounds like the referee in the game in question knew his Laws.

A goal may be scored in this manner, UNLESS the referee blows his whistle too soon.
