Question Number: 16727

Law 16 - Goal Kick 9/16/2007

RE: High School

Aaron of Pittsburgh, pennsylvania USA asks...

Does a goal kick have to be played forward?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

No a goal kick, in fact any free kick by the defenders within the PA must be played out of the penalty area to be legally in play
. So one can kick it towards the corner posts. Realize that if you kick the ball over the goal line before it clears the PA it will be a retake as it must clear the boundries to be in play!
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

The only requirement for a goal kick to be completed is it be kicked directly into the field of play. After that it is in play. This actually applies to all free kicks awarded a team within their own penalty area too.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

No. It must clear the penalty area before it is in play but does not have to go forward to do this. The only 2 kicks that HAVE to move forward are kick offs and penalty kicks.
