Question Number: 17923Mechanics 11/15/2007RE: Rec Under 17 Daniel of vienna, va usa asks...Well, I was wondering what your opinion of the Taylor Twellman goal against the Chicago Fire...
To me it was a bicycle kick but a dangerous high kick. I mean the defensive guy was right there, and for his safety he just got out of the way... maybe a judgement call as are a lot of things, but I think calls against dangerous high kicks should be enforced. Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol One consideration in judging such a close play made by the pros is that they generally have much better control over themselves, and both teammates and opponents have a much better idea of how plays are about to develop. Every year or two a new picture gets posted around on websites, usually with a foot contacting a ball a few inches from someone else's nose, titled, "Was this Dangerous Play?" It was not dangerous at that high level of game, simply because the players are so good. Owners of both the boot and the nose knew exactly where the other one was. It is a foul (IFK restart) only when an opponent must cease from play to avoid the dangerous situation. Most times both players are quite content with the situation they have put themselves in, so no call is needed.

Perhaps if I'd have seen it live I'd feel differently but I didn'e see any opponent disadvantaged by what was a spectacular kick.
