Question Number: 18104Mechanics 12/10/2007RE: Competitive Under 13 Avery Haskell of Overland Park, KS USA asks...What is the proper way to abandon a game? Say you eject a coach from the field and he refuses to leave. The proper thing to do is to blow for match and leave. Then what? Also, if you eject a coach and he leaves who is there to coach the team or to sub people in? Thanks Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol You tell the coach he has been dismissed and must leave. If he stays around, you tell him that unless he leaves the game will be terminated. Give him a minute or two to come to his senses, and if he still will not go, you simply state, "OK Coach, this game is over." Collect your AR's, collect your things, and head to the parking lot.
Now you must report that the game was terminated. Certainly this report goes to the league through whatever means you normally submit game reports. You should also inform your assignor and the State Youth Referee Administrator. They can assist you in writing your report, and in submitting it to the correct persons.
Many State Youth Associations require that there be a responsible adult in charge of teams at all times. Coaches and other officials may be required to have passed a Risk Management assessment. The league may require that any coach be listed on an official roster of the team. Check what the policies in your area are. If the coach you dismissed is the one and only person allowed to be in control of the team per league and state rules, then the game must be abandoned. Report as in paragraph above.

If he refuses to go you give him a time limit for him to change his mind. The only time I have ever had to do this I told the coach he had 2 minutes to leave of the game was going to be called. If he still refuses you simply tell both coaches the game is over and the match has been terminated and you and your crew leave. You have to write up a report and send it to the proper authorities. I would also call the league assignor and make sure that person contacted the Director of Coaches (DOC).
