Question Number: 18476

Kicks From The Penalty mark 3/5/2008

RE: amatuer Adult

stephen of glasgow, uk asks...

can a goalkeeper be sent off in a penalty shoot out, if so what would happen next

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

YES!
A team mate ON the field would take his place.
No substitution is allowed, whether or not allowable subs would permit it because no injury occurred.
It is a little known fact but even during a shootout if a keeper is injured he can be substituted from the bench.
Cheers

Then another player from the team who was on the field at the end of the game is permitted to take his place in goal. A sub may not take the keepers place, unless the new goalkeeper were somehow injured and the team had a substitute remaining which is often rare in games that go 120 minutes.

This could also provide for interesting strategy if the Kicks From The Penalty Mark go beyond the 5 initial kickers without a winner. The team with the sent-off keeper now has one less player to continue with taking the kicks. The "Reduce to Equate" principle applies only before the Kicks start.
