Question Number: 18476Kicks From The Penalty mark 3/5/2008RE: amatuer Adult stephen of glasgow, uk asks...can a goalkeeper be sent off in a penalty shoot out, if so what would happen next Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson YES! A team mate ON the field would take his place. No substitution is allowed, whether or not allowable subs would permit it because no injury occurred. It is a little known fact but even during a shootout if a keeper is injured he can be substituted from the bench. Cheers

A sub may not take the keepers place, unless the new goalkeeper were somehow injured and the team had a substitute remaining which is often rare in games that go 120 minutes.

The team with the sent-off keeper now has one less player to continue with taking the kicks. The "Reduce to Equate" principle applies only before the Kicks start.
