Question Number: 18520

Law 9 - The Ball in and out of Play 3/11/2008

RE: Select Under 13

Rudy of chesapeake, va usa asks...

Team A attempts a corner kick, somehow the kicker kicks the ball into corner flag and goes out of play. The referee had team A re-kick. Shouldn't the ball belong to Team B?

Thanks,

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Barring some weird circumstances, it would appear that the ball should be Team B's, either a goal kick or a throw-in.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Rudy,
if the ball was kicked into play the result should be a goal kick if the ball went off the cornerpost then over the goal line or a throw in if the ball went off the cornerpost then over the touch line. A ball on a corner can be kicked in any direction, the restart location is anywhere within that corner arc.
It is vaguely possible the ball was off the field of play or in the opinion of the referee being repositioned and accidently bumped the post or that some misconduct had already occurred and needed to be dealt with before the restart.
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

AT a corner kick, the ball is in play when it is kicked and moves. I suspect this referee was confused and thought the ball had to leave the corner arc before it was put into play. If the ball was kicked into the corner flag and then went over the touch line, it would be a throw-in for Team B. If it went over the goal line, it would be a goal kick for Team B.
