Question Number: 18654

Law 15 - Throw In 3/31/2008

RE: competitive Under 15

Richard Jones of Ona, West Virginia USA asks...

1. What is the restart if a player throws the ball directly into an opponents goal without it touching any one? 2. What is the restart if a player directly kicks the ball into his own team's goal on a corner kick?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

1. Depends on who's doing the throwing from where. If it's a throw-in, then the restart is a goal kick for the opponents. If it's the goalkeeper who threw the ball from the other penalty area, the restart is a kickoff (after scoring the goal). If it's another player on the field, the restart will be a direct free kick or penalty kick for the handling foul.

2. Corner kick for the opponents.

Which test did you miss these on?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Richard the chance of these occurring are very rare but as in most things rare if it does happen it will likely be at a time when those in attendance will have no clue. To kick a ball into your goal from the opposite end of the field while taking a corner kick is a heck of miss kick or the strongest wind storm possible but it would be a corner kick for the opposition no goal would be permitted. This assumes the dumbstruck keeper meekly watches it go into his goal.

A DIRECT throw in into the opposition's goal is a goal kick restart. This has a greater potential of occurring but again the keeper must not hinder the balls journey as a single touch turns this is a good goal and a kick off

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

1. Assuming you mean this is a throw-in, the restart is a goal kick for the opponents/ Were this the keeper doing the throwing, the restart is a kick-off. 2. It is understood that no one may score upon themselves at any restart. therefore this would be the same as if the ball was kicked over one's own goal line. Corner kick to opponents.
