Question Number: 18890Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 4/26/2008RE: High School Tracey Casto of Goldsboro, NC USA asks...Is "screening" a player allowed in high school soccer? Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer It all depends on what you mean by "screening"? If you mean having the ball close by so it may be played immediately and using your body, not your arms, to prevent an opponent from reaching the ball then yes, it is allowed.
If you mean getting in the way of an opponent and preventing her from passing by when the ball is someplace else this is called, in American high school, obstruction. The rest of the world calls this impeding the progress of an opponent. It involves no physical contact, too. If there is physical contact it becomes holding, charging or maybe even striking and those infractions are direct free kick offences.
Historically if the player impeding moves back and forth and sticks her arms out in the act of obstruction then the referee is obliged to stop play and caution for unsporting behavior. The restart for obstruction is indirect free kick.
