Question Number: 19242

Law 5 - The Referee 6/1/2008

RE: REC Other

Rumy of new brighton, MN United States asks...

I am wondering how you refee the 2 person refereing system for rec. games?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

If you are a certified US Soccer referee you should NOT do these 2 man games unless you are also licensed by someone else that will provide you insurance. US Soccer smartly does not recognize the horrific 2 man system

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

According to US Soccer, who do not recognize the 2 referee system, you don't. Their first choice is a diagonal system of control [3 man], second is 2 referees and a club linesman, third is a referee and 2 club linesmen and third is an unregistered referee. So the how to is solved easily by not accepting the match if the league is a US Soccer affiliate and/or you are a registered US Soccer referee. If the league is not a US Soccer affiliate you may referee the match but you MUST not wear your US Soccer referee badge. I hope this answers your question. If you are not a US Soccer referee and work in an unaffiliated league hope the other guy can brief you. You can also look in the NCAA or NFHS rule books for information.

Regards,

Look into the NFHS booklet that describes the mechanics. Again, this is not a USSF system of officiating.
