Question Number: 19537

Law 15 - Throw In 6/30/2008

RE: MAPS Under 12

Brynn of Lebanon, New Jersey U.S.A. asks...

is it legal to throw the ball into the goal from a throw in?

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Legal? Yes. Foolish? Definitely.

Throw-ins are a form of indirect restart - the ball has to touch another player before the ball can score a goal. If your question was can a goal be scored directly from a throw-in, the answer is no.

If a ball is thrown into the goal by the opposing team it is a goal kick restart. If it is thrown into the team's own goal, it is a corner kick. Both scenarios assume no one touches the ball on its way into the net.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Of course it is. Law 15 - The Throw-in actually addresses what happens when the ball enters a goal directly from throw-in. Ref Maloney addresses those contingencies.

Regards,

Brynn, I think you really want to know if a goal can be scored from a throw in. The answer is no and the restart is a goal kick or a corner kick if thrown into your own net.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

A player may throw the ball anywhere onto the field he likes. However, if it goes into the goal without touching another player first, no goal will be allowed. The restart will be a goal kick or corner kick depending on which goal the ball is thrown directly into

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

For the goal to count, it must touch another PLAYER before going in.
