Question Number: 19539

Mechanics 6/30/2008

RE: Rec Adult

Jon of Houston, TX USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 8695

With regards to a situation like this [8695], what is the proper thing for the AR to do? The usual mechanic (sprinting up the touch line) could seem as if he is running back up to the position of the 2nd to last defender. Should the AR, after realizing that the center doesn't realize the ball went into the net, simply stand in position with a raised flag?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Jon there are two ways to signal a goal in the United States and after the first of July 2008, the rest of the Football World. First is the sprint 25 -30 meters up field.

Secondly, if the ball is in and out for a goal the assistant is to raise his flag to stop play. Once the referee sees and whistles he makes his sprint. Believe it or not that mechanic has been published since the 1994 Guide to Procedures for Referees and Assistant Referees. It may be found on page 25 of the current Guide to Procedures.

It is of extreme importance the assistant give this signal FROM the goal line because it is such a critical thing. Signalling from any other place will render the referee's sale of the goal being scored a most difficult task.

Regards,
