Question Number: 19552

Mechanics 7/2/2008

Chris of Vancouver, Canada asks...

I noticed during much of the Euro championship games that players were often treated on the field, (e.g. the trainer would enter the filed, assess the injury, often spraying the injured area with an aerosol and creating a semi-fog in the area!)

Does this not go against the additional instructions to the referees in the LOTG? Not that I am objecting, I am just trying to understand the rationale and application. Thx.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Applications of magic water and a bit of sprayed 'get better' stuff are not really being treated on the field. They are sort of evaluating the player in more detail before attempting to move and, possibly, exacerbate an injury not that evident.

I was more concerned about the referee stopping play for, what he thought was, a serious injury and not ensuring the player leave the field for treatment. OR cautioning the player for simulation! Of course those referees didn't get another assignment, did they?

Regards,
