Question Number: 19818

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 8/25/2008

RE: High School

travis zeigler of salem, ohio usa asks...

in high school soccer is a player allowed to chew gum? i had a player told it was against the rules and she had to leave the field. i had to play down for 5 minutes until i could get her back in the game. does not sound right to me.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

NFHS rules do not prohibit the chewing of gum. They do speak of players not wearing something dangerous to themselves or any other player. It is possible the referee thought gum constituted a danger to the player himself. If that was his opinion you must go with what he thinks, however foreign to your sensibilities. Could it be he has seen someone choke on gum? Who knows?

If he declares the gum as unsafe and asks her to leave the field and remove it from her mouth then she must leave and can re-enter only at the next dead ball situation. If that is 5 minutes on then you play without that player for 5 minutes. Play Ruling 4.3 Situation B.

Regards,
