Question Number: 19857Law 1- The Field 9/1/2008RE: Competitive Under 17 Kathy Somers of Alamo, California USA asks...My son's team lost a tournament game due to a goal where the ball first hit a branch hanging over the goal before dropping straight down and rolling into the goal. The tree trunk was behind the goal and outside the field of play, but the limb hung over the field. The referee called the goal good. Was this a correct call? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Unless there were local ground rules to the contrary, the goal was good. Overhanging trees and wires that cross the field are known as pre-existing appurtenaces. They would never be there in a professional field. But if they are there and the teams elect to play anyway, you play with the field as-is. This differs from interference by outside agents, which are things that enter the field temporarily - people not on the team, animals, birds, a loose ball, etc.
