Question Number: 19879Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 9/4/2008RE: Adult rufckev of rotherham, living uk asks... The ball is in play inside the penalty area when a defender spits at an opponent near the penalty mark. What is the colour of the card and how is the game restarted?
Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson The location of the ball is immaterial so long as the ball was in play. The restart location occurs from where the opponent was who was spit at. The only restart for that if play is stopped is a DFK. A DFK inside the penalty area of the offender is upgraded to PK status. The offender is shown the red card and sent off his team plays a a man short as a result. If play was already stopped the spitting incident becomes only misconduct the red card shown and the player is dismissed.
