Question Number: 19916Law 15 - Throw In 9/10/2008RE: competitive Under 17 russell swanson of sherman, ct fairfield asks...if a throw in hits the referee and goes in the goal, does it count as a goal? Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino No.
The law states that a goal may not be scored directly from a throw-in. Therefore it must touch another player first in order to count. The referee is not a player, therefore play is restarted with a goal kick or corner kick depending upon which goal it entered.

View Referee Steve Montanino profileAnswer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Assuming it hits only the referee and doesn't touch any players, it would not count as a goal. All throw-ins are considered 'indirect'.
If a ball in normal play caroms off the ref into the net, it would count as a goal.
In short, touching the ref before entering the goal doesn't change the direct or indirect nature of the ball.
