Question Number: 19990Law 18 - Common Sense 9/18/2008RE: recreation Under 14 Donna Barkley of Durham, NC USA asks...i am a new referee and i would like to know how i should request the players/captains address me. Ms. Referee, Mam? When i play in rec leages I always adress the male refs as Mr Referee or Sir. I have not had a woman ref yet. thank you, Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney As long as they don't call you a four letter word, I guess you will be fine! Just kidding. However you want them to address you is fine. Most of us go by 'Ref' or 'Referee', which has as an advantage its simplicity and doesn't need to be gender specific. I usually introduce myself to the coaches and captains as 'Hi, I'm Michelle and I'll be your referee today. These are my AR's, Bill and Donna.' Ms. Referee, Ma'am, is rather formal, but if it makes you more comfortable, that's fine.

Cheers
