Question Number: 2004

Law 3 - Number of Players

RE: Premier

Mark of Adelaide, SA Australia asks...

If the goalkeeper is to change with an outfield player, what procedure needs to take place? I know they must swap shirts but then they will have different numbers to what they started the match with, is that allowed? Can you give me a hand with this one?

Answer provided by Referee Victor Matheson

As long as the exchange takes place at a stoppage and the referee is informed of the change, there are no problems. You are correct that the players will now have different numbers, so you as the referee must be aware of this when keeping track of cautions.
